As I zipped past a 2km queue of traffic trying to get into the fish market on Friday, I couldn't help but think of superstitions... But we love rituals, of all sorts, don't we? Wearing my orange and black scarf as I shout at the tv doesn't make it any more likely that my team will win. Doesn't even really make a difference if I'm at the stadium... I just enjoy the belonging. Stupid humans. - Posted from rhpmobile

As I was brought up by 2 extremely devout Jehovah's witnesses... Saying that when they come knocking at the door sounds like it would only be inviting more discussion... My hot tip, feel free to use it, would be to say you are a satanist and worship the devil. Watch them run and never come back!! They have a do not call register and this would be certain to get you blacklisted haha.

OK.... not seeking to offend the religious among us.... but my atheism is after all.... Gods will in your mind LOL SO.... during the illness from which he subsequently died in 2005, the church said to "pray for the recovery of Pope John Paul II".Now, presumably, Catholics would claim JPII's passing was "Gods will"...... .....so.... the church asking its devoted members to pray for his recovery would seem to be seeking to deny God his popes death.... and undermine Gods will..... right?!!!lol

I can confim this works. But thanks for the alternative LRE, will keep that one in mind for the more casual conversations with god-fearing acquaintances.Mr C

In Tibetan Buddhism there is often a lot of superstition around rituals. Nothing to do with the teachings of the Buddha,I think just cultural hangovers from centuries of other traditions such as Bon, or a motivation to not be lazy. Just as Christians incorporated pagan traditions,Easter being a prime example, as it was originally a pre-Christianfertility festival ,some Bon traditions have been incorporated into Tibetan Buddhism.

I heard this on the radio. Someone suggested you could put up a sign in front of your home going "Peddlers of religion are not welcome". I find that most of the Christian groups that knock on my door are quite polite. I just say I am not interested, and they go away. Freya, Tibetan Buddhism has a lot of tantric rituals in it. However, they have incorporated mindfullness and other Buddhist teachings into them so it is the Tibetan flavour of Buddhism.

Gelugpa and now Ningma sects but supersitions such as MO throwing....ie divinations using a special di or mala....believing that if offering bowls are not perfectly straight one will be reborn as a crooked legged dog, believing that in the collection of grasses for particular fire pujas the correct number must be picked or there will be a hindrance on one's life.....silly and of course not all Tibetan Buddhists believe these things, but they are cultural, nothing to do with the teachings of the Buddha.
