Search Engines

September 18 2013

I've been experimenting with a couple of different search engines (Firefox and Explorer) and noticed they both seem to have their good and bad points. I hoped fellow RHPers might give me tips on what it is they like and dislike about the search engines they use and I'll share my thoughts later in the thread. Anyone who can point me to one that will format my posts they way I set them out will be truly appreciated!

I sympathise! My laptop came with Explorer, so I downloaded Firefox off the net which is what I usually use. But Firefox isn't formatting my italics anymore, so I fired up the Explorer page and use both now, side by side LOL. Explorer has it's moments too. There are differences in the way the 2 search engines work... and there are other search engines. So, apparently I'm a geek though I would never have thought to describe myself that way.

Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Safari are all internet browsers (programs for surfing the internet) that run n the various Operating systems.Search engines include google, yahoo, bing, ask and a heap more. These are sevices not programs.Any browser can use any of the search engines. Some search engines specialise in retrieving results within a specific area or field. You can use the Wikipedia search engine to search for only results within Wikipedia for example.Firefox browser using google search engine is best IMO

I think you mean web browsers, Mrs Peachy? I believe search engines are Google, Bing, Yahoo.... etc but someone correct me if I'm wrong. Personally, I prefer Firefox to Internet Explorer (IE). Have never had any problems with it in Windows.I do like my writing to be a little fancy when I post too

I don't know why sometimes the italics don't always appear as how we want it. Have not tried with IE but IE always seems much slower to me.

Thanks... I am on the same as you by default then (firefox + google) and really the only thing I have to complian about is the formatting of my text in posts. IE + google works for that most of the time. . Cheers Cwhereitgoes lol. it looks like I'm doing the right thing with Firefox.

Firefox and explorer are browsers :) and can use any 'search engine'. However firefox has been leading the way since before google unintentionally changed the world. I tend to stick with firefox as far as browsers go but i have come to like chrome, especially since i use gmail. I would avoid explorer UNLESS a particular webpage is presenting problems with formatting. In that instance i would probably try that page in explorer as it was probably written specifically for such. As far as search engines go i would use google first, bing second and astalavista.box.sk to search the dark recesses of the internet. Happy browsing/hunting and feel free to contact me if you ever need tech support :)- Posted from rhpmobile

They will often require a flash or java pluggin to work properly so you may find that updating the flash pluggin in Firefox and the Java runtime will fix the issue ? Works fine for me with same browser.PS Look in top right hand corner of the Firefox window and you will see the search box - clicking the little arrow next to the icon (usually google by default) will reveal a list of the currently available search engine services you can use within Firefox ... more can be added.

@justforfunisall Yep i have also been learning and playing with the ... What do they call them... Advanced search modifiers anyway. If your looking for something that isn't well known but is similar to something that is extremely well known its the only way to find what you want without going through 500,000 results lol - Posted from rhpmobile

Damn Mes, too much of what you say flies right over my head, too funny now that I know I was asking about web browsers rather than search engines. :-P . Thank you gentlemen all and Tulips for explaining that to me. :-D. I do feel like I understand a whole lot more than I did before. I’ve downloaded Chrome as part of the updating I’ve done today lol. I checked my plugin statuses, and managed to update the flash which didn't make any difference when I tested on Firefox. There are 3 outdated plugins that won't update (2 x Java + 1 x Adobe), 3 plugins that are up to date which includes the Shockwave Flash, and three unknown plugins that I don't think would have anything to do with my problem. I tried using a different OS (Linux) ;-) I've experimented without a lot of luck and have only a rudimentary understanding of why my laptop is being so... So, it's due a visit to the pc store anyhow where I can see if they can fix numerous other *little* problems lol. Those wires hanging out the side of the screen are normal, right? 0;-P . Lol Tulips, you so pointed out my problem. Except I'm trying to stay out of the corner!!! I'm gonna be a happy girl if we work this out... I will ask my computer person what the problem was (assuming they fix it if none on RHP has worked it out beforehand) To you and Mes, Tips that I have found help, sometimes lol. If I have taken a long time writing my post (like I usually do lol) I copy the text and refresh the page... and then paste, change the font, colour (multiple colours don't often work too well) etc until I am ready to post... And then I try not to make any changes to what I have written after that. THEN, I cross my fingers. Ah yeah, and apparently no line breaks on IE, so I put a full stop inbetween. . I can't use bold on Firefox either Mes, but I don't use it as much as I do italics. I haven't done any work with Chrome yet LOL. . Eponym... between you and Freya, Indefatigable, my vocabulary is expanding exponentially! . Thanks Coops! The thought is very much appreciated :-) . Lol Just xxx . Bloody computers Cwhereitgoes, as bad. or almost as bad as cars... *Insert frustrated female face here*.. Be careful where you place that face. :-P . 50z, I'm confused... On Safari? :-) .Can't wait to hear how the formatting comes out on this one *searches for screaming face, hair on end, totally exaggerated end of my wits look*
