The Cast Of Cheers - Family

Despite a name that nods to a cheery all-American 1980s sitcom, Irish quartet The Cast Of Cheers serve up joltingly catchy guitar tunes that reveal they’re really post-punk spirits.

Their debut album, Family, arrives in the wake of buzzy live gigs and kicks off with the spikily insistent title single; even frontman Conor Adams sounds as though he’s reeling from its punchiness: ‘My head, my heart… the floor.’ It’s not always clear where TCOC are going (there are hints of influences from Gang Of Four to Vampire Weekend) but they’re in a heck of a rush to get there.

Rip-roaring tracks including the surreal romance of Palace And Run (which serenades a sweetheart’s fragrant knees) and They Call It A Race suggest these talents are out to make an instant impression.

It deserves to be a lasting one, too, on an indie scene where everybody knows their name.
