There are a lot of reasons to be sweet about Gabriella Cilmi, while most 16-year-olds are busy finding friends on Facebook, this talented songbird with the velvet vocal chords is waxing lyrical about love and life with a maturity well beyond her years on her debut album, Lessons To Be Learned.

With cheeky lyrics about making trouble and getting away with it, this Aussie-born musical prodigy also deserves full kudos for knocking her Madonna from the No.1 spot on the UK Top 10 chart.

Comparisons to fallen New Wave artists aside (Amy Winehouse and Lilly Allen anyone?), Cilmi’s old-school jazz tones and retro rock bravado is infectious from the first single Sweet About Me (is there anything more empowering than screeching “When you’re playing with desire, don’t come running to my place when it burns like fire” at the traffic lights?) to the harpsichord mixes of follow up track Stop The Lies, it is pretty clear this sassy school girl knows her stuff.
