I get out of bed.

I make a paperchain person with "hug" written on each one and various smilies on their faces. One housemate drew a Pokemon and wrote a poem for the other housemate, as he doesn't do "affection" but wanted to make them feel better. A random nonsense text. A potato person in the fridge waving a flag that says "hi". Anything that costs no money, only time and effort... because in the here and now, those are the commodities that we truly value. (when I say I get out of bed, it's on my days off, when my lover is having a "donwanna" day, and I make coffee and do domestic shit, purely because I hate it, and he knows this, and I do it anyway just for him.) Find something they like... and expend time to give it to them. Cook curry, draw ponies on their fridge (whiteboard markers! lol), create a treasure hunt (with a chockie at every clue and you in the bed at the end), bake (yes, this works, I shit you not), order some random awesomesauce tshirt from threadless, or coffee from coffeesnobs, delivered to them, because you know they'll love it (I say coffee, because the smell of coffee alone is enough to get me happy/high)... 'scuse me, I gotta go play surprisefairy now...

Non Indulgent

I tend to give the" lecture", the one about other people who are much worse off

than they are. The one that usually ends with, "now get your shit together and get on with it".

Hugs are ok too. just before delivery of the get your shit together line.

I don't pander to princess like behaviour.

Cheers Felonius

Everyone has their 'downs'.

They always spring back. Be patient and let them know you are there for them.

A healthy dose of the ridiculous sometimes helps

Not for a significant other, and kind of a one-off, but for a housemate that was down in the dumps after a breakup:

While he was asleep I made a giant spider web out of masking tape that covered his doorway, tacked toilet paper streamers from the ceiling that dangled down to the floor, and lined underneath it with every available mattress, pillow and blanket in the house. There was a note stuck on the inside of the web with vague instructions to smash on through. The running dive was spectacular.

Of course I didn't do it out of niceness; I just couldn't stand his goddamn moping.

Special

If I know they are feeling down I know that any effort will help.

Something as little as breakfast in bed or just sitting throough a chick flick without snoring can improve their mood.

Oh and always answering the dodgy questions like "would you do that for me" that relate to idiotic hollywood premises in these type of movie.

Of course if she is having her period its different, heading for cover and treading carefully are sensible too.

Mmmmm Chocolate :) Who doesn't love baked goods.

Its the little things like these that require a bit of thought and come out of the blue that work IMHO.

Make it all about them..

If your friend is down and to cheer them up... You have to know them, know what their favourite foods are, favourite movie, favourite past-time etc.. First of all acknowledge that they have had a crap day and be their ally... whether you agree with them or not.. :) You and I against the world etc.. Then combine all the things they like... e.g. "Hey, for tonight, why don't we go and get your , rent out your  and watch it whilst eating Belgian Chocolate  because I know that's your favourite.. Whilst we are watching the DVD and eating chocolate, is it OK if I give your shoulders a rub?"    :)  or if she prefers... take her into the bedroom and make sure you do all the work!..

Hmmm If you use less than or greater than symbols in your posts.. it seems to treat them as null characters, leaving out words making you seem like a goose!  :)

Just let him rant

Nothing in this world will cheer your *for lack of a better word* partner up like someone to rant to, tell them exactly what has pissed them off, that followed by a cigar and a scotch works a treat.
