"Take Care"

Feb 06, 2010

I just spent a couple of amazing, incredible no-strings-attached days with a great guy who I probably won't see again (distance, other complications).

Over  these few days though, we did discuss staying in touch (email, msn, etc).

Then, an hour or so after I left, I got a text from him which ended with "take care".

Now, I've always been wary of the expression "take care"... In my experience, it's always a way of saying "Hey we had fun but, well, probably don't contact me anymore".  I was surprised, and a little hurt but mostly because I was expecting to keep in touch with this person. Now, I'll just be taking my coat and leaving quietly, I guess. Not much else to do.

To me, "Take Care" is designed to come across as final because it IS final. The genius of Take Care is in its subtlety. It's both pleasant and brutal at the same time. Because what can you write back to Take Care? Nothing, except "you too".

Do you agree? Did I read it wrong? Have you ever "Take Cared"  anyone?

Take care = be well...?

'Be well', could I imagine, have a tone of finality to it similar to 'take care' but when I say it, I mean it as a sincere farewell.

It might help to take the body of the text into account as well as the closing.

Good luck... luv to know how it works out... Mrs P'

I was wrong... dontcha just hate that? :)

Thanks to all of you who replied on this thread, interesting to read how many different ways a text can be read.... I DID follow up with the person in question (it would have driven me crazy otherwise lol)... and I am so happy I did... apparently "take care" does mean "take care" and not "goodbye forever"... lol... who woulda thought?

Here's to golden, glorious, sexy, fun days....
