Why can't I do push ups?

Completely non-sexual question, so keep your pants on all you naughty minded peeps ;) I'm not what you would call fit. And I'm a bit heavy. But I do go to the gym twice a week and run (ish) for half an hour twice a week. At the gym I do a combo of strength and cardio with a PT, and I've certainly been getting stronger and fitter over the months. I've been fit (ish) in the past and had strong legs, but for the life of me I've never been able to do a push up. Not even one. I can barely do a girl's push up. Can someone please tell me what muscles I need to target and how best to work on them? Pretty please :) One thing that does seem to get in the way - my wrists seem to take a lot of the weight and pressure, and really hurt. So, what am I doing wrong?

My Dear Halcyon

As with any form of sport or exercise, the only way to get better at something is to do that particular thing. The major muscles worked are the pecs (chest) and to a lesser extent (triceps and biceps). There is no need to go smashing more weights to target these muscles to improve on pushups, a simple change in angle will suffice (any PT worth his / her weight should have been able to tell you this). If you are struggling to do girl pushups (on your knees) then perhaps consider using a bench to place your hands on, whilst keeping your feet on the floor. Doing this reduces the effect gravity will have on the exercise by changing the lever angle that your body creates. The higher the bench, the easier the pushups are. Gradually decrease the size of the bench you are using as your pushups ability increases. Soon you'll be so advanced you'll be making it harder by placing your feet on the bench instead ;)

Good luck babe and you know how to get hold of me if you want any more help. x

Hello Halcyon:

Being able to do a couple of "Push ups" is a relatively easy thing to learn.

I am interested to know why you PT can't assist you.

Having said that, I have met with some wrists which were medically unsuitable for the activity

May I email you with a few ideas?

Why Can't I do Push ups

Hi! Hun :0

It can be frustrating that's for sure when you're doing all you can and don't seem to be getting there..The 1st thing that came to mind is you've the use and experience of a Personal Trainer why don't you ask them ? They should know ..

If you don't wear wrist supports it probably will be a good idea to get and use some..They will give you that little extra help in doing push ups too..

A fun way would be to lie on your back get your Playmates to lay over you when you've got your arms extended but elbows bent a little .You use them as weights your Partner can help with the spring action by using their feel to push up and down...

This will exercise your arms muscles upper and lower ..If you tire they fall on you then you can enjoy very sensual kissing more he!he!..Enjoy Lu :)..

My PT focuses on my whole body fitness. I don't want to waste the sessions just building strength for push ups, but would like to do some stuff outside of the gym to work up to them.

Any help would be hugely appreciated :D

Thanks x

actually Insight ...

What you said about pecs, biceps and triceps is interesting. I think my pecs have always been the problem - very, very weak. My arms seem to respond to weights really well but I never seem to make much progress with my pecs. I shall follow your advice, thank you x

Various forms of push ups

There are many forms of push ups, so maybe if you start off with the varied and less strenous ones til you get stronger in the wrists or other areas.

you can do what they call ladies push ups, instead of the whole body it is from the knees, or even easier still is upright, a distance away from the wall and do them that way, , making it a bit harder each time it gets easier to do that particular exercise, and gradually before you know it you will have progressed to the point you can do the proper one.

what insight said

i find to start up, standing at the kitchen bench is easier... you're on your feet and can stand back or as close in to the bench as your comfortable with... then as he said, go lower and lower...kitchen table then coffee table perhaps then you're good to go girl! down on the floor or all fours! lol

wrist issues

Rather than wrist supports, I would suggest making a fist, and doing the pushups from your knuckles i.e. the fist against the ground. Despite what the movies say as if it is a punishment, it is stronger for your wrist because you don't have to bend your hand. (I often get the sore wrist problem, but doing them this way I don't get any injury).

I would also suggest building up to the pushups by not doing 'girl pushups' off your knees, but always doing proper pushups - and just changing your angle like Insight79 said. Even if you start by leaning against a wall, then pushing off say, the kitchen bench, then a chair, then eventually the floor. The reason is that as well the push movement, the pushup requires a lot of work from your abdominal region to hold your torso straight. Doing girl pushups you won't strengthen any of that area.

Good luck. (IIRC there are some good 'how to learn to pushup' resources out there on the web)

Push ups? Simple

Abstain for awhile, and when you're so F%&*%$ desperate for a long, hard, noisy, sweaty screamining orgiasmic fuck, climb aboard a hard dick and push it and push it and push it some more oh oh oh, and if he cries out, push it some more oh oh oh oh.

See, make push ups and sex fun. Don't take push ups and sex too seriously, otherwise they turn into fuckups.

First set

Done, post run this morning. About a 60 degree angle from the ground, good plank position, hands a bit wider than my shoulders but shoulders forward over my hands. I could really feel it, and started to isolate the muscles. Thanks peeps! All the tips have been great :)

I was going to suggest using push-up "handles".

These would keep your wrists straight during the push-up movement but it would not allow you to build to handstand push-ups. To strengthen your wrists, you might try squeezing squash balls. You can do this frequently, at any time of day. It doesn't need to be part of your structured routine.

I have madelung deformaty

No I cant do them and never could....as I was young I was always wondering why I couldnt do push ups or situps...until I found out. Everything what pulls my wrists is not posssible for a long time either.

You just get so used to your body so you never think it is something wrong. And I mean there is nothing wrong with an amzing body, the body just made other helpful things to compat this deformaty and its emazing my hand and wrists function.

You will do other things to get fit......lol. Beautiful what ever you do.

Cheers Litonya
