Spell Check is your friend

Maybe I'm just being pedantic, or perhaps it's just PMS, but the one thing that irritates me above all else is the lack of basic spelling skills.  Don't get me wrong, I know some truly wonderful people who can't spell to save their lives, and by no means am I perfect in any way, it's just a personal gripe of mine.

Does the lack of spelling / grammar / punctuation on a profile or message turn you off someone?

We did this one recently

Your right though, decent spelling and punctuation is nice.

Personally I always have problems with correct use of the apostrophe

and too or to. No doubt there are others I just haven't even realised, I work on it though.

I don't like spell checkers, I don't believe they improve your skills, much

better to look it up in the dictionary, be that book or online version.

Literary skills are also a poor indicator of a person, regardless of what most females will tell you.

*You're right....

I did search the forums for something related to this, but couldn't find anything. My apologies, though, if this has been done recently.

nice post

felonius, couldn't agree more.Somedays I am using the dictionary more than others.Obviously on a profile it shows laziness and lack of thought if there are lots of typos. However if a message is thoughtfully constructed then a few spelling mistakes make no difference to how I perceive the messenger.

yo yo,wots up,wots happening, wot you doin etc make me grind my teeth, and my response is usually...nothin'

Many very intelligent people are dyslexic and to dismiss what they have to say would be stupid.x Hugs H

used to but over that now

one of the most adorable older gentleman I know constently uses text speak in our communications and it doesnt  bother me a bit.

My fingers and brain are often working at different speeds (different planets sometimes to - or is it too ) thus my spelling and grammar is often left to the wayside.

As long as I can understand what they mean then I dont mind. Besides with so many with ESL in this lovely country a little lee way is appreciated. Its a much easier language to learn to speak than it is to write.

Yes and No

If I read a badly spelled but well written profile or post I will overlook any errors but if I think laziness is involved then it is a major turn off. As for text speak, I think it is fine for mobile phones and that is where it should stay.

I would also like to see a greater use of not only dictionaries (not spellcheckers) but thesauri as well.

I love searching the forums and thought you might like to know that if you use the 'advanced forum search', you can search for profile names and topic & post headings.

I only just now discovered the 'advanced' feature... Guess you do learn something new every day!

And yes, this was discussed quite recently so I do apologise.

Easy to over look

It's well documented, that the human brain is such a wonderful thing, that if just the first letter, and last letter of any word is correct, the brains natural reaction is to read the word as if it was in fact correctly spelt.  This may account for some of the more easier of spelling mistakes that we find in posts.

if someone can't spell

if someone can't spell does it really make them any less of a human being?

Poor dyslexics never get a root !

Buuuuuuut in fact its often the reason I will flick a profile. If the couple or individual say to the effect "we will score you on spelling and grammar"  We often think to ourselves oh lord your too much like hard work !

I want you to fuck me not write me a book ! I agree text speak often heavily transcribed into a profile will send me a bit batty. Yes I would love a spell check but I still fuck up my there and theirs from time to time.  I type and type quick think about this often comes second ! Oh and my off and of and to and too's.

Stay sexy be respectful and be involved and we will all have fun.

It varies depending on the mode of communication. Different media vary in levels of formality. An SMS is fairly informal - people used to try and save time and money by fitting lots into short messages. These days however with free messages included in most plans and pretty decent auto-correct features, there's not as much of an excuse. Chat programs are relatively informal, where a speedy response is usually more important than accuracy.

Some people approach emails like SMS or chat. I don't. I approach them as closer to a letter than an SMS, and since you have the ability to revise and edit before you send it you should.

The point of proper spelling and grammar is that it makes it easier for someone else to read. It literally hurts my brain to read something with no punctuation, because I don't know when to pause, what to emphasise, or how to make meaning from it. If the flow is broken by me trying to decipher what it is you've said (and this applies to text speak) then you've lost me.

Mistakes in forum posts I can forgive in others, because they are relatively informal and there is no edit function. (Saturn 65 - classic!)

Mistakes on a profile page though are a cardinal sin. That's your face to the world, your home. That's what people are taking first impressions from. There's no rush to get something out there. Take the extra 10 mins to get it right. If you know you have problems with expression get someone to look over it and give you feedback (preferably not in the forums though).

To me I equate spelling and grammar with personal grooming, or housekeeping. I can be a total slob when I'm by myself, but if I'm expecting company I'll put in the effort to present a nice front. You don't need to do your hair when you meet someone, brushed hair says little about who you are as a person, but gee, it's nice to do so, and tells the other person you at least respect them enough to put in some effort.
