I think it's a place the vast majority of us have been at some of maybe many points in our lives. It's easy and very natural to get downhearted in that circumstance.  Three years ago when my marriage dissolved, I was there myself.  Keep your chin up.  Find one thing you enjoy doing, walking, playing an Xbox game, watching a DVD, having coffee with a friend, and whatever that one thing is try and do it once a day even if you don't really feel like it.  Yes, as the saying goes....nice guys finish last.  BUT, they finish and they finish with their heads held high, with integrity and being able to look themselves in the mirror each day.  I have dropped this a few times recently in posts, but Shakespeare got it right about 400 years ago..."and this above all else, to thine own self be true." I don't see you as a victim, just someone who is having a rough time and things got on top of him! And remember if you're the nice guy and end up "just as friends" you still made a friend, and when you do end up really connecting with someone then you'll really really connect.  I am pretty sure I have the moral courage to fall for someone again, I know I have the capacity and it certainly sounds as thugh you do as well.  I'll leave you with another quotation that helped me through a few dark days, this one is from Winston Churchill......"Success is not final.  Failure is not fatal.
