Discreet.....Can You Spell It Correctly?

With tongue in cheek I need to post this! DISCREET not DISCRETE! For goodness sake learn to spell this word correctly! The majority of profiles here on RHP have this word spelt incorrectly! Buy a Dictionary or do Spell Check before you post! Yes, tis small thing but gosh it is sooooooooo annoying when you read thru profiles & find so many people using this word (naturally enough) & not bothering to use correct English! Dont let your standards slip! Yes standards are still necessary on these types of sites!!!!!! Cheers, Domin8trix4u

Discreet or discrete

Maybe they like the island of crete? Perhaps we should ask the site operators to add a spell check button when editing profiles and messages? But then there wouldn’t be as many funny profiles around :-)

Domin8trix4U, It’s bad, almost as bad as definetly as opposed to definitely or perhaps exquisetely as opposed to exquisitely or maybe even aphrodiasiac as opposed to aphrodisiac…. Now check you’re profile ;)

for the record

So there is no confusion, the two versions exist in their own right and are completely different words. Discreet is careful and prudent in one’s actions while discrete is individually seperate and distinct. Spell check would not solve this conundrum. dxp

Not just the spelling

Good evening Dom , I agree to a point but I must say that I can accept the spelling in the majority of cases unlike the bastardization of simple yet correct grammar. The thing I find the most annoying is the acceptance of TXT spelling and the grammar involved with it , to spend the time to write an introductory e-mail to someone only to recieve the response of - Hi how r u ? wat u doin tnite. What are we teaching our kids about being able to comunicate with others , it horrifies me that these people will eventually be our countries leaders. OzProfessor

Not a Nazi

Hi KL , Well I’m not a Nazi in any way , I just think that when you are replying to someone who has taken the time and effort to write an e-mail it deserves a reply in English and not broken TXT. I have seen several profiles on here from women that blame the guys for bad spelling and grammar and request that if they can’t write a proper e-mail for them not to bother writing at all , my comment was that I have received some atrocious replies from women that would take a crytic decipherer to translate. Would you accept an e-mail from someone who will only converse with you in TXT , bad spelling and grammar ? TXT has its place when used on a mobile or between long time friends in e-mails ( I use it myself when I IM with friends online ) but one of my own daughters friends used it as her "normal" way of writing and was  picked up at school for using it in an essay , her excuse - she didnt know how to spell the words the right way . I don’t blame the kids for it as I have also seen the abhorant mistakes made by teachers as well , if they can’t spell or write properly then what hope do our kids have. I also am extremely proud of my 2 kids and I hope that I have raised them to be good citizens , polite , helpful and considerate to others. We all wish the best for our kide but if the system accepts this rubbish for use everyday then all I am saying is that it will become normal to communicate this way and for me it is unacceptable when used for anything but fun between friends. maeks it hrad for me I am a fyslexic ducker olo Yes of course grammar is important, but realistically words are just words and don’t really matter too much as long as the actions of people are from the heart.

Jumping jellybeans, discreet or discrete are Ok by me as long as it is not discreet as in "I’m cheating on my word to my partner." Surely if we are going to get preachy on standards then there are higher order standards to maintain than spelling. Not sure if I can spell hypocrisy correctly but at least I know it when I see it.

Oh Please..................................get a Sense of Humour........................

MrPleasueInc, This lady wrote "Tongue in Cheek" at the beginning of her post! Surely, you can see her post was written with Humour>>>>>a quality you appear to be lacking! Obviously this lady is very Discreet, as am I, n many of the other Ladies on rhp are also. Her reasons for Discretion are quite valid, in fact, they echo my own personal reasons for using Discretion daily. Loosen up n have some fun, this is an Adult site, which promotes sexual adventure & promiscuity amongst consenting Adults! RHP is flourishing because it provides Adults with they type of outlet they seek, in droves! Judgemental attitudes do not belong here! Especially as you are Assuming the lady is attached etc because her profile states "Prefer not to Say"! BTW dont waste your time messaging or flirting me..................I dont seek a guy with your obvious "high puritanical standards"!!!! Oh, silly me, I am Assuming n being Judgemental! Oh well, back to Tongue in Cheek! Life is soooo much fun here on RHP with all the other Sinners to communicate with!!!!! Ciao Passion8

Don't need spellcheck

There's no point in a spell check for this! Discrete IS a word, but it is misused in the sense of drawing minimal attention.

spelling

Discreet and discrete are the least of my concerns with this sort of thing.  I must say the that the sms talk really gives me the shits.  People, the whole point of it is so that you can fit what you're saying into the minimal space provided by an sms.  (and also because typing using 9 buttons for your entire alphabet as opposed to 26 is a pain in the ass)  There are no limits to how many letters you can use here, so for your own sake, use real English so that other people know what you're trying to say. My other pet hate is just general bad spelling, the many and varied spellings of definite is my (what's the opposite of favourite?).  You have one chance ot make a good impression, spend the extra 30 seconds to look up the correct spelling of a word you're not sure of.  (Or maybe 5 minutes depending on just how bad your spelling is)

Well, look at that - all this time I was just thinking that discreet was another American bastardization of our language! Thanks for the post Domin8trix - there's another entry for my vocabulary.. :)

Discreet...hmmmmm

Not only can many not spell it, that on its own is a turn off, but really people when you use the word perhaps it would be more than a great idea to actually know what it means....!!!!

oohhh....the word that gets me...

is MYRIAD....even newspapers don't know the correct meaning of this word and the right way to use it in a sentence ffs!! Myriad is the same as several...you don't say someone had a several of something....but they always say they had a myriad of something... ahh...always reminds me of the movie Jawbreaker....but I digress. lol! Discrete Vs Discreet

Unless I seriously miss my guess, Discreet and Discrete are two seperate words with dissimiliar meanings. Discreet means "having or showing discernment or good judgment in conduct and especially in speech" where as Discrete means "consisting of distinct or unconnected elements", or non-continious.  A meeting could be both discrete and discreet if one was prudent in concerns to talking about the act, and if it was a one-off event.
