In fact in recent years the police have really upped their focus on misbehaving tourists. Twenty-five years ago Bali was just adjusting to the real influx of overseas visitors, and it was still a very basic, largely untouched island. The Balinese are very laid back and they tolerated tourist madness. These days the main parts of the island are pretty well developed (for Bali standards) and there's a definite underbelly of more sinister activity - drugs, prostitution and more. At times, in my experience, the Australian accent has also been pretty unpopular over their though I haven't experienced that kind of tension for a few years. I used to sunbathe topless anywhere in Bali, and I've been known to have sex on the beach. I remember noticing a row of men lying fairly close and watching us very late one night. It was spooky and dangerous and we got out of there super quick. I adore Bali and have been visiting for a long, long time, but I've found it necessary to be more cautious as years have passed. This isn't helped by the steady stream of unbelievably obnoxious drunken Australians that visit. I think Bali was a naive little island in the beginning, but not any more. The government, who I've had some dealings with through work, and the business operators are plenty sophisticated now. To give you an indication of how they might take to public nudity, they now arrest/fine male tourists for riding scooters without a top on - not for reasons of safety, but for public indecency. I've never heard of a nude beach in Bali, though there might be one. I'd simply suggest being careful and naturally always remember to respect the culture.

By living in Indonesia for over a year.... this may attract unwanted attention... and i would not want that in a muslim country.

    maybe do it discreetly perhaps
